Cmdr. Joe Hendrickson and new recruit Ace Jefferson set out across the surface of Sirius 6B, where they hope to settle a violent labor dispute at a remote mining outpost. After going too far to turn back, they find the desert riddled with deadly Autonomous Mobile Swords, or Screamers. Created to protect the mines, these burrowing weapons have learned to replicate themselves. To make matters worse, recent generations of Screamers can assume humanoid form.

The ensuing Darwinian struggle combines space opera skirmishes and Cold War paranoia - although the characters' dialogue involves the kind of tough guy/gal posturing overfamiliar from the sort of '80s action movie this was in fact supposed to be.

A pretty good effort for a low budget sci fi. The actors were capable, although the characters they played were tediously grim and unlikeable. The twists and turns in the plot felt a bit contrived... would have preferred less of them.

A good bad movie that has its charm. Nice environments. Flat characters but which aren't annoying. Derivative but engaging enough with that unique 90s aesthetic and acting.

Painfully slow, poorly acted, suffering from a limited budget, and with some of the most questionable characters (but most amazing one-liners) ever put to film, I doubt Screamers is what PKD imagined when he wrote the short story.
