John P @JohnnyP1963 4 days ago A beautifully made, well acted, but thoroughly un-entertaining and unsatisfying film. Supposed to be funny, but not particularly funny. Characters that are one-dimensional, unrealistic stereotypes. And highly annoying, without anyone to root for, and a central character who keeps yelling at us that he "hasn’t done anything." Which he hasn’t. He’s just an intolerable sniveling bore. And the point being that either the universe is chaotic and mindless, or perhaps that there’s some vindictive god that will kill you as soon as you do ‘do anything.’ Whatever. I could’ve told you that before wasting my time watching this relentlessly pointless story. Well lit though! I loved the location, scenery and the Jewish neighborhood. The "Goy" neighbor cracked me up with his stereotypical he-man behavior and the fact that he wasn't the most favorable person in the neighborhood. Of course I enjoyed the plot, the acting, the atmosphere and the angst. The wise rabbis didn't offer any comfort or practical advice, which is true for most religions. I found the ending very surprising and satisfying. The main character is so pathetic, it goes beyond laughable to just boring. Having said that, I am a huge Coen brothers fan but this was just bad. I get what they were going for, the whole modern Book of Job theme, but it misses, and misses badly. I wasted 2 hours of my life trying to make this entertaining. It just isn't. See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Aug 8, 2026 The Coen Brother’s films have always felt unique and idiosyncratic, and that hasn’t always translated to accessibility. A Serious Man is a perfect example of this. I very much enjoyed it, loving the bizarre approach, witty dialogue and subtle yet tragic depiction of a man slowly unravelling. The funniest aspect of it is watching people ostensibly trying to help our lead but talking and behaving like they couldn’t care less about him or his troubles. It’s a biting commentary on how averse we are to actually helping other people, lest we become emotionally involved in their problems. The tone is occasionally too dry for its own good, and the ending falls completely flat because it happens abruptly and doesn’t seem to tie into any theme the film had established. I wouldn’t put it among my favourite Coen Brother’s films, but it’s a Hell of a lot better than Burn After Reading! See more Read all reviews
