While you can feel Cole's passion for the story bleed from the script to the screen, this tale of a young black man who does not want to repeat the mistakes of his father - only to end up in the same prison with him - comes up a little short.

I like your average gangster/hood movie plenty. This one I didnt even realize the cast when I started. Did a double take seeing Jeffrey Wright in it - I was like 'really?'. The biggest thing that came to my mind as I saw him performing this role was 'American Fiction'. I just watched that months ago, and his character makes a big name playing stereotypes and entitling his book 'F&ck'. I loved that movie. Then I watch this one and he is literally playing the same character of the book he just fictionally wrote in that movie. I have a lot of respect for him as an actor. I get it its a paycheck and some big names in this movie. This movie though was completely ordinary. Production and acting were fine but it did nothing for me. It did not keep my attention. Only saw irony watching Jeffrey Wright. Hope he got paid well.

This movie moves you in ways you don’t see coming. The first opening scene takes you into a heavy spiral of the challenges faced by black youth across America. The acting is incredible by the full cast but more so by Ashton Sanders. A young man just trying to find his way out of a trouble life. From trying to get a normal job, to avoiding selling drugs, he eventually is forced to do things he always wanted to avoid. If you want to be moved, watch this movie.
