In this portrait of parental sacrifice and the love of a father for his son, former wrestler Kakhi (played by real-life Olympic champion Levan Tediashvili) embarks on a journey from his home in the Republic of Georgia to visit his son Soso (Giorgi Tabidze) in the Russian-speaking neighborhood of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. There he finds him living in a shabby boarding house populated by a colorful group of fellow Georgian immigrants. Soso is not studying medicine, as Kakhi believed, but is working for a moving company and has accrued a $14,000 gambling debt to a local Russian mob boss. Kakhi sets his mind to helping his hapless son out of his debt, leading to situations as often comic as they are dire.

Though Levan Tediashvili is hardly an expressive actor, his minimalist performance proves more affecting than that of a calculated approach. Kakhi looks as if nothing could rattle him, but he learns the hard way that stoicism has its limits.

Many of the actors in Brighton 4th, including the lead, are nonprofessionals... Coupled with the use of real locations and unfussy cinematography by Phedon Papamichael, the result is something that frequently feels like documentary rather than fiction.

It is a really cool performance for Levan Tediashvili who plays a version of himself, but it is too slow and meandering to maintain a wandering mind. Luckily I played it on a quicker speed and the Georgian film with a heavy dose of Brooklyn rang a multi-pronged bell. In reality, it's fine. Perhaps a bit too restrained, the family dynamics are amusing and events have consequences. There is a slice of life feel, even if it may be a little bit outlandish for the middle of America folks. Solid, but never spectacular. Final Score: 6.2/10

I just couldn't get into this film, so I stopped watching part way through. I wanted to see more of the inner workings of the Brighton Beach neighborhood and of the Russian-speaking community that inhabits it. Plus I was curious to see more of life in Georgia. But it doesn't seem like they give you much of that. It may be that I just didn't give it enough of a chance. I may try it again later.

Synopsis
