Having worked with 3-star Michelin chefs/kitchens I can attest to the veracity of their representation herein; the culinary mastery of this picture stands alone as a true winner. Brad Cooper is splendid in his role as a bruised but not broken commodity; his French is excellent, and he inhabits the role with great authenticity, encompassing his bearing, his every movement in the kitchen. His relationships with Tony, his mandatory therapist, Rhys and every member of his staff ring true and meaningful. The low scores are due to this being a Miramax film associated with Harvey Weinstein, and that's the problem with RT: the ratings are not about the film or the quality of the actors behind the script. Instead, it's the political agenda RT wishes to convey. We are at a point in tech where we can train a machine to make predictions based on content and identify clear bias. This is one of those movies with low RT scores that we can prove are driven by bias rather than content. Premise: Bradley Cooper plays a two-star Michelin Chef and recovering drug addict seeking his third Michelin star in, of all places, London. The film drives home the point that success isn't an individual feat but one that requires the help of friends and those we would call family. Easter Eggs: Count the references to Henry David Thoreau's Walden or Life in the Woods. I liked it. See more Adam M @RT57204468 Oct 1 "Leaves much to be desired" is a cliche phrase that perfectly represents this cliche of a movie. The pacing is terrible and none of the lines really felt like they meant anything. The idea of the movie is good and it does all the things a movie is supposed to do on paper, but none of it lands. It feels like the movie didn't have enough time because the movie spends way too long in the first half running around gathering a cast of characters you'll barely get to know or care about. And you watch as everything comes together but just like mediocre food it's just bland I'm not the best at knowing where things went wrong but most of the acting seemed decent and the writing was probably okay. So my guess is either a lot of good material was left on the cutting room floor or the direction to make this a cohesive dish instead of a bowl of ingredients. That being said despite how bad it is I will give it credit because I AM disappointed. The movie makes me want to see a better version itself.
