Based on George Crile’s book, the film does a great job translating complex history into something engaging and accessible without feeling dumbed down. The script is witty and fast-paced, with dialogue that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The performances are a huge strength, bringing personality and nuance to characters who could’ve easily felt one-dimensional. There’s a strong mix of charm and tension throughout, making the story both fun and thought-provoking. It also subtly highlights how decisions made behind closed doors can have lasting global consequences. Overall, it’s a smart, well-crafted film that manages to be both informative and highly watchable. 8/10. See more Cavanşir G @drgadimov Apr 11 I watched this movie years ago and it made a lasting impression. It gives the bigger picture of geopolitics. The US supported Afghan fighters against Russia. Later, some of those groups turned into the Taliban. The US gave them weapons, and later those same weapons were used against the US. How ironic. Freedom fighters become terrorists depending on who needs them. That's the hypocritical face of US politics. The movie shows how Wilson provided weapons but not schools—focusing only on the war, ignoring the aftermath. An iconic scene with Russian helicopters and Stinger missiles. My rating is 9 out of 10. If a movie still makes sense and you remember it after almost 20 years, it's great.
