A stylish, subversive thriller from suspense-maverick Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse), concerning Yoshii, an ambitious, yet directionless, young factory worker from Tokyo who side hustles in the murky realm of black market reselling, cheating buyers and sellers alike. After swindling his way into loads of cash, he becomes slowly disconnected to humanity, moving out of the city, shunning his girlfriend, and hiring a devoted assistant. But after a series of mysterious, sinister incidents occur, he begins to suspect his former victims could be plotting the ultimate revenge. As a crime thriller, Cloud has plenty of intrigue, hidden motivations and shocking violence to satisfy fans of the genre. However, writer-director Kiyoshi Kurosawa elevates the material by turning it into a puzzle that ultimately reveals a bleak message about the universal nature of criminality. A brilliant film. One would probably argue that there’s some worthiness while messsging about greed in Cloud. But not this one. This one thinks Cloud was overlong, dull and finally nonsensical. The director should probably have had one honest friend review the screenplay and point out its stupidity.

Too many people aren't understanding the allegory of this movie which is surprising because it lays it on pretty thick. Once you realize Yoshii represents modern tech bros and corporations and his "assistant" represents world governments, the ending scene makes the message of the film absolutely crystal clear. It's a horror film in the way it holds up a mirror to our horrific current economic structures.
