Riveting and bone-chillingly creepy, Cropsey manages to be one of the best documentaries and one of the best horror movies of the year.

Nothing is answered definitively here. But if there's a real Cropsey to be found, it may be Staten Island itself. Go to Full Review

Cropsey is a creepy documentary with all the elements of a horror film about a demented serial killer, and an extra ingredient: This one is real. Go to Full Review

Cropsey is really well-paced in doling out both large and small revelations. Go to Full Review

One of the creepiest documentaries ever made, Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio's film shows how some urban legends are based on true stories even more unsettling than the myths. Go to Full Review

Wayne K @RT88290232 Aug 27 Cropsey sheds light on a true crime case that, despite my interest in topics like this, I’d never even heard of, and ties it in with a (possibly) fictional boogeyman who haunted the lives and dreams of the families of Staten Island. The film starts out exploring the legend of Cropsey, an urban legend that may or may not have been inspired by a real life killer who preyed upon children, especially ones with mental disabilities, but it morphs into a much more conventional detective procedural, with interviews with families of the victims, friends, police, lawyers, detectives etc, and the Cropsey element very much gets put to the side. I wanted to hear more about the legends, the folklore and the superstition. The pliability and subjectivity of these legends is an element that’s introduced early on, and I wanted to see how that had changed over time. Did people have increasingly different interpretations of Cropsey as the case went on, or did they become more homogenised as the case pointed more and more towards one killer? The Cropsey tale comes back at the end, effectively bookending the film, but I would have liked that element to have been woven throughout it. That being said, it’s a chilling story about a man who people have very interesting opinions on, and whether or not he committed the monstruous crimes he’s accused of, or whether or not Cropsey was borne out of his misdeeds, there’s no doubt that the recounting of these events is enough to make you check your house twice before you switch off the lights. See more Iro A @RT07721755 05/05/2024 Don't waste your time, very bad true crime documentary and not scary whatsoever. The dude that was convicted got life based on some hunches or something, THERE WAS NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE. This will make you mad just don't. See more Alec B @Alec97 11/10/2023 Too often the filmmakers resort to cheap, manipulative, 48 hours-esque stylistic choices but they do manage to make disturbing connections between an urban legend of their childhood and the horrifying reality of a series of crimes in their neighborhood. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 10/10/2022 A documentary on a real-life boogeyman stemmed from urban legend roots speculatively seeded by the affecting community shows real-life horror with multi-layered uncertainty surrounding the patterns amidst declining presentation but not without provoking a difference in the thought process plus being nicely unfolded in a moderately captivating matter. (B) See more 07/13/2022 This documentary is definitely something to watch when you're bored. I feel they could have done more with this film, maybe get more facts, seek out some answers to some obvious questions. One major question being who was this George guy that found a disturbed area during the first search for a child, he claims he saw it during the search but know one else did, why didn't he make people dig at that moment during the first search. He was so adamant about this area he saw with clay balls in the dirt indicating the area had been disturbed in some way which led them to search again and viola there was the body. Later on there is a hint that there was evidence that the body showed signs that it was moved to that spot. Was this George guy questioned?? Was DNA ever tested on the body that was found of the 12 year old? Did children stop coming up missing that fit the profile after Rand was arrested? Maybe another documentary can be done before this guy passes away that's a little more focused on hard evidence and not the urban legends, cults and bad witness statements. See more Read all reviews
