In an effort to protect their three children from the corrupting influence of the outside world, a Greek couple transforms their home into a gated compound of cultural deprivation and strict rules of behavior. But children cannot remain innocent forever. When the father brings home a young woman to satisfy his son's sexual urges, the family's engineered "reality" begins to crumble, with devastating consequences. Like the haunting, dystopic visions of Michael Haneke and Gaspar Noé, Dogtooth punctuates its compelling drama with moments of shocking violence, creating a biting social satire that is as profound as it is provocative.

This is the second feature for Lanthimos, and it's a leap from his well-received debut Kinetta. He skilfully doles out tantalizing pieces of information, keeping the viewer in a constant state of suspense and wonder.

An interesting art drama with a non-traditional structure, where we simply observe a family and their awkward dynamics. The closest thing to an inciting incident arrives late, triggering the final stretch. In most films this would be a flaw, but here it works due to its artful approach to revealing character. The filmmaking, especially compositions, camera movement, and editing, draws attention to itself, distancing us and inviting judgment rather than immersion. Performances are strong across the board. The film unfolds as a series of seemingly disjointed scenes, each adding layers to the characters’ isolated lives, offering symbolism and commentary on how we construct private worlds to shield ourselves from society. Its unique style keeps us engaged while highlighting its craft. Yorgos Lanthimos would later expand on these themes and tone in his career, but his signature discomfort is already present here. I recommend it for film buffs, though some may find its pace tedious.

Sometimes it’s so nonsense and darkly funny that becomes uncomfortable. Especially in the useless violence scenes. You really must not emphasize to appreciate it. It benefits from Lanthimos’ ex-post legacy as you can now see this is his first meaningful signature to movies.
