What Worked: • James Marsters as Piccolo actually tried. His design was one of the few things close to the source. • Tyler’s orchestral score had that big action feel. I nodded along even when scenes didn’t deserve it. • When they let actors move, a few practical martial arts beats had actual energy. What Didn’t Click: • Massive story changes really lost me. Goku in high school? I kept thinking “this isn’t Dragon Ball.” • I couldn’t buy Justin Chatwin as Goku. The casting in this film felt off and the lack of spirit took me out of it. • It had a cheap Syfy-original vibe. The cities looked like a backlot and the CGI ki blasts were super rough. That's what Dragonball: Evolution was. 89 minutes of mind-deadening nothingness that didn't even manage to summon a moment's anticipation beyond the title itself. The directors had clearly never seen nor heard of Dragonball before deciding to make the film. They just used the name to make money, knowing full well they were going to crap all over one of the longest-running and most successful anime franchises in the world.
