I would generally call myself a fan of David Lynch, but I think this is the weakest of his films I have seen so far. It's just really not a very good film. If you haven't read at least the first book, you'll be completely lost. The characterizations were overplayed, done to excess, perhaps intentionally, but they felt forced, especially Rabban and Baron Harkonnen, I get that a bit of it is Lynch's style, but it felt like it was too much. The effects were a bit of an overreach for 1984. And that leads to my last criticism of this movie, in that it TRIED to do so much, but it was limited by the technology of the time. No fault there. But it's clearly a movie of its time... Just not a very good one. After seeing Denis Villeneuve’s modern adaptation, this version feels chaotic, confusing, and painfully dated. The storytelling lacks clarity, the pacing is erratic, and the narrative never fully connects in a meaningful way. Instead of immersing you in its world, the film constantly pulls you out with awkward exposition and bizarre creative choices. Even allowing for the limitations of its era, the effects and presentation feel fake and unconvincing, making the experience even harder to sit through today. While some appreciate it for its strangeness or nostalgia, the film comes across as a disorganized mess that struggles to communicate its own ideas. "Dune" (1984) is a perfect example of a movie, that tries and fails to adapt an epic story into a 2 h 10 min flick. First time i watched this film only in 2025, after seeing Denis Villeneuve's Part 1 and Part 2 multiple times. This 1984 adaptation has one core issue that sinks the whole movie down - its run time. There is no way in the world that they could have possible adapted this epic story in a any good way within 2 hours film. It's like making Lord Of The Rings adaptation with 1 h 45 min run time. "Dune" (1984) has great costumes, good set design, desert scenes do look impressive. I watched this movie in 4K UHD presentation so i won't tell how many times i saw wires holding the Baron up in the air. Acting was decent enough for this kind of movie. But its writing and storytelling that do not work. It's the bizarre scenes involving milking of cat, or Sting in his underwear that do not work. See more Read all reviews
