An imperfect film but one that uses sound design and editing with precision to create a sense of ever rising anxiety and dread. In that most crucial sense, I think the film accomplishes its mission at creating an authentic set of feelings for the audience while still honoring the memory of the men who experienced this battle firsthand. I have seen it a good few times now but this one hit differently, more emotionally than before. What stays with you is not just the survival or the tension but the deeper realization of how war reshapes a person from the inside out. Watching it, all you feel is that this should never happen to anyone. War remains one of the ugliest things humanity keeps repeating on itself, and the sheer scale of loss, millions of lives gone, is something the film never lets you forget even without spelling it out. This is a film best watched in IMAX, especially because dialogue is almost stripped away, letting sound and visuals carry everything. But the one thing I keep coming back to after this watch is how Nolan never once shows you the face of the enemy. No faces, no names, just distant shapes and gunfire.
