Suzana Q @Suzana8 1d Incredible slice-of-life film. It is awkward to watch because of how authentically it portrays the middle school experience. Even though my middle school experience was different in ways (iPhones and social media were not a part of it), the vulnerability and angst are true to form. Redeeming qualities include the good acting, semi-realistic dialogue, and one or two mildly amusing moments. I guess it might be relatable to some people, but relatability isn't what people watch movies for. When the protagonist ends up in virtually the exact same place they started, just a little older, it makes you wonder what the point was. I've loved Bo Burnham since he was 16 because we're practically the same age, but this was genuinely so disappointingly bad. I'd hate to say, "stay in your lane", because the directing wasn't awful, but the actual storyline was a completely missing. I'm happy some people feel like it scratched an emotional itch for them, but it was the driest nothing burger ever, for me. The role serves as both the anchor of the story and the key to our attention and affection. Should the character not engage, the movie is a flop (regardless of how amazingly assured new-to-the-scene Bo Burnham is, as writer/director). Here, the anchor comes in the form of Elsie Fisher. 15 years old (her first main role) carrying the weight of the movie on her shoulders. And incase you didn’t guess already, she is absolutely incredible. One of the best performances of 2018, in one of the best movies of 2018. Confident, hilarious and unflinchingly sincere.
