Michelle T @Mimimosa Feb 12 I love a good gothic romance, but Stoneheart Asylum misses the mark. The performances, set design, music - all solid, but the intriguing concept is wasted on a self-indulgent "chosen one" fantasy. The film frames obsession and manipulation as devotion with zero self-awareness. Remove the romance completely… or keep it and lean into the darkness fully to make it something truly tragic and romantic. See more Eli M @HimmyNeutron Jan 30 Anyone who finds this movie "cliche" or "generic" really just doesnt appreciate the nuance of exactly how well-written and planned the plot of this movie is. While on the surface it masquerades as a run-of-the-mill turn of the century gothic horror mystery (after all it is based on Edgar Allen Poe), the subtle and implicative commentary on the tenuous understanding of "sanity" is beautifully executed 🤌. Even on the surface, I found this movie quite thilling intellectually and emotionally, but as I understood the director's real plot behind the different characters motives etc, I realized it for the work of art it is. I can aliken it to Nightmare Alley in it's tone and commentary on the precariousness of certainty, as it is upended suddenly and unexpectedly for multiple characters multiple times throughout the film. My favorite scene having to be near the end when Cylus is playing chess with the Superintendent Salt and as they overhear a conversation he tells Dr. Salt "Checkmate 😏" 😂 See more Rehan T @RT81460504 Jul 21 I enjoyed the movie. A lot of well known actors in a poor pantomime. No message, no laugh, not even a proper cringe. What the filmmakers’ intentions were, we cannot ascertain. The movie does a fantastic job of showing the complexity of the characters, revealing the good and evil qualities in both the caretakers and the patients of Stonehearst Asylum. This gripping story gradually reveals many twists along the way that unfold during the story's telling, the best of which can be found right at the end. Highly recommend. See more Read all reviews
