Anika Noni Rose shines as the mother, capturing both protectiveness and frustration, while Sandberg balances vulnerability and strength. Robinson is charming, though slightly inconsistent, yet his chemistry with Sandberg sells the romance. The screenplay is mostly solid but predictable, with minor pacing issues. Visually bright and well-scored, the film effectively contrasts confinement with glimpses of freedom. The film touches on some key and dark topics that could have made this film great if it had delved into them deeper, instead, they were glossed over (likely to cater to a younger audience). We recommend this movie because despite it being sad, it's actually interesting. With it's great cast, the movie is a great adaptation of the book. The plot twist towards the end of the movie makes us cry every time we watch it. The book May provide more information about different things that they don't talk about in the movie, but it gives us a reason to go between the book and the movie to compare as well as fill in different blanks.
