EZRA follows Max Bernal (Bobby Cannavale), a stand-up comedian living with his father (Robert De Niro), while struggling to co-parent his autistic son Ezra (introducing William Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife (Rose Byrne). When forced to confront difficult decisions about their son's future, Max and Ezra embark on a cross-country road trip that has a transcendent impact on both their lives. Directed by Tony Goldwyn, who also appears in the film alongside additional cast members Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg, EZRA is an endearing and often funny exploration of a family determined to find their way through life’s complexities with humor, compassion, and heart.

While normally I’m a soft touch for any film about autistic children, one just can’t let something as sappy and annoyingly didactic as this road movie get by without some honest assessment.

This is worthwhile film-making and the performances are solid, but there's too much reliance on the schmaltz factor, especially towards the end. It will be interesting to see what the young actor Fitzgerald does next.

Cannavale is emotionally committed in every frame. He plays an emotionally and almost labyrinthian complex character that is so committed to his son, he would crawl into the middle of the road and die for him if required. A career best performance.

We loved this movie and highly recommend it. We thought all of the actors did a great job. We liked the focus on the relationships between these characters and that they were not always nice and neat. The filmed did a very good job of showing conflict between characters and the struggles people have to understand a neuro-divergent population. Two thumbs up.
