Unfortunately, Anthony Asquith's direction is hurt by faulty film editing and irritatingly slow tempo. Go to Full Review

And 'ere we are again indeed, with this time the fastidious Asquith mediating the addictive pleasures of a Gainsborough period melodrama. Go to Full Review

It's a beautiful story, and I'll not spoil it for you. Go to Full Review

The Asquith directing is clean cut, sure and sensitively evocative of his period atmosphere -- evocative, too, of unusually fine work from practically every member of a well-chosen cast. Go to Full Review

11/16/2013 Though not really a bodice-ripping guilty pleasure a la The Wicked Lady or Madonna of the Seven Moons, Fanny by Gaslight has other charms. Indeed, though at times Calvert and Granger seem a little lost without pvertly hammy types to play, Anthony Asquith provides nicely subtle direction which plays up the subversion of what on paper seems like a classic good-hearted Victorian heroine story. All in all, a remarkable women's picture-- complete with a brothel, a bar, secret illegitimacy, murder*-- that travels between high class and low class to comment on the tyranny of honor, particularly that which requires the ignorance of a "respectable" woman. *Yeah, I really do wonder how the Hays-Code cut of this Fanny by Gaslight would at all be comprehensible.
