Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. Dory now knows that her family reunion will only happen if she can save mom and dad from captivity.

There's no way around it - it suffers from being the sequel to an undeniable classic. And even though there are some emotionally impactful moments in it, there's also a lot that falls flat.

Original is easy to watch multiple times. Not this one. Where the original has well thought out jokes, scenes, and most important: lessons... this one smears it right in your face. Dory is forgetting almost everything all the time. The lessons are literally spelled out for you, and not once but multiple times. For example, in the original Marlin in the beginning says: you can't do it Nemo! Than in the middle Nemo finds a kind of Guru in Gill who wants him to know he can do things without help, and after that Marlin shouts to Dory: No, you can't Nemo! (Suddenly realizing he's talking to Dory, not Nemo). And then we see the shift. Nothing is spelled out, it's all by what happens in the broader context. Not in this one. The message is, no joke, spelled out literally and not once but repeated over and over again. Original was a masterpiece for young and old, this one is a bit of fun for young kids and that's about it. Major difference in story telling quality. That is my 1000 words review.

Finding Dory is an absolutley wonderful sequel that has way more heart than I expected. Dory was already one of Pixar's most lovable characters, and giving her center stage turns out to be a fantastic idea. The animation is stunning, the new characters are hilarious, and the emotional moments really sneek up on you. I laughed, got a little misty-eyed, and had a great time from beginning to end. A funny, touching, and beautifuly animated adventure that more than lives up to its predecessor.
