DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 6d Beneath First on the Moon's playful façade lies a sharper edge that quietly skewers Soviet myth-making, propaganda and the fragility of "official" history. Shot in wonderfully grainy black-and-white and stitched together with uncanny precision, the film commits fully to its premise; the archival footage, talking-head interviews and period detail all feel eerily authentic to the time period. The deadpan dedication ultimately sells the illusion, walking a fine line between satire and alternate history. Heroism is constructed, erased and reconstructed at will, leaving its cosmonaut less a man than a ghost of state ambition. There's a melancholic undertow here, the sense that even grand achievements can vanish without a trace if the narrative demands it. The deliberately meandering pacing often feels as if mimicking the dryness of real archival material, but that's also part of the trick. First on the Moon isn't just telling a story; instead, it's performing one. See more Read all reviews
