A veritable chameleon, investigative reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher (Chevy Chase) might drive his editor (Richard Libertini) up the wall, but he always produces great pieces for the newspaper. When his next story is about the drug trade taking place on the beach, Fletch goes undercover as a homeless man. Unaware of Fletch's true identity, businessman Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) offers Fletch $50,000 to kill him. Intrigued, Fletch decides to unearth the full story behind the offer.

Fletch is first and foremost a Chevy Chase vehicle, and how well the film works for you will depend heavily on how much you enjoy Chase’s shaggy comic style, which freely mixes deadpan dialogue and physical slapstick with heavy doses of sarcasm

FLETCH is a charming, breezy "action" comedy in which Chevy Chase successfully plays himself playing a character, which is to say that his nonchalant approach to his own smug silliness is definitely part of the fun. The plot is pretty loose too, allowing the whole film to casually glide along, consistently amusing if only occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. There's rewatch value for sure, in part because so much of the film is so unserious that it's instantly forgettable.

I never read the book but I just watched this movie last week on Labor Day because it was streaming on Netflix for the 40th anniversary and this is one of new favorite movies of the 80s. This has the best comedy for audiences ever, even the soundtrack was really catchy tho. Nothing will get any better than this. This is the most successful movies to get a huge comeback ever.
