When an inner-city Detroit foster mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is murdered in a botched holdup, four of her now-grown adopted children suspect it was no random killing. Rising musician Jack (Garrett Hedlund), former-Marine Angel (Tyrese Gibson), hotheaded hockey player Bobby (Mark Wahlberg) and settled-down husband and father Jeremiah (André Benjamin) go on the hunt for neighborhood criminal kingpin Victor Sweet (Chiwetel Ejiofor) while being trailed themselves by the local beat cops.

A usually sharp script, a firecracker turn from Chiwetel Ejiofor and a decent amount of suspense and surprise. There are worse directors than John Singleton who have switched focus to B-pictures with the right amount of substance.

Dynamite chemistry between Marky Mark, Tyrese, Andre 3000, and Garrett Hedlund, delivering heart and one-liners galore. John Singleton’s direction is gritty and stylish, the action scenes are wonderfully shot, and the 70’s soundtrack is a knockout. 10/10

It is not your typical routine crime film. It brings a distinct grit and energy that helps it stand out from standard revenge stories. The storyline builds up nicely and leads to a really satisfying ending..
