Jackie G @jackiegia Jul 8 I get that this movie is 25 years old, but I still can't forgive the directing (or maybe the casting). The twist was obvious within the first ten minutes, so instead of being surprised, I spent the next 89 minutes waiting for it to happen. Frailty follows two brothers, Fenton and Adam, as one recounts their childhood through flashbacks. Raised by a father who believed God commanded him to kill demons disguised as ordinary people, the brothers are forever changed, and one carries on the tradition into adulthood. *Spoilers* McConaughey tells the story as Fenton, yet in the present he's blonde while his younger self in the flashbacks has brown hair. Meanwhile, Adam is the blonde brother. The hair colors accidentally give away the ending: McConaughey isn't Fenton at all. He's Adam... and the killer. I don't think it's a bad movie, but for a psychological thriller that depends so heavily on its final reveal, giving away the twist this early completely deflated the experience. Kind of lame. The way it combines gritty crime procedural, psychological thriller, serial killer mystery, and religious horror makes it conceptually compelling even if not entirely unique in this regard. All these elements are woven together in a tight, gut-wrenching plot. You come to suspect that the twist might be coming at the perfect moment, just in time for the reveal to resolve the ambiguity. It’s not that the twist is predictable, but that the film builds intelligently to an inevitable realization. Indeed, this is a good description of the story as a whole. The dark tone throughout the movie is sustained with ruthless persistence, able to incorporate its ‘mystical’ elements without sacrificing a core of brutal realism. The story about the 'indoctrination' of the kids is really gripping and well performed by all. Theres one really hard hitting jump scare too. Bloody hell! Great horror mystery.
