Jacob B @RT89309114 Mar 10 Whatever points Gran Torino scores for representation are probably undermined by the focus being on a white man*, even if it isn't an outright White Saviour story, but it's not really a bad movie. It is a compelling drama with a strong performance from Clint Eastwood, good character development for the main protagonists, a good mix of moments that are heartwarming, sad and even a little funny and a climax that does something different rather than the stereotypical guns-blazing you might expect. It's not a mind-blowing cinematic experience but it does have good intentions and enough memorable aspects beyond Eastwood politely asking these gentlemen to leave his domain to make it worth a watch. Still not the kind of movie I'd expect to have its own Wikipedia page focusing on the characters. *The Hmong actors' inexperience is sometimes evident, except for the sister. I liked her and her own intergenerational friendship with our politically incorrect hero. Gran Torino finds Clint Eastwood revisiting his tough-guy persona, this time tempered by age and world-weariness. His performance carries the film, infusing a familiar gruffness with unexpected vulnerability and dry humor. The story is somewhat predictable — a cantankerous man reluctantly befriends his immigrant neighbors and confronts local gang violence — yet Eastwood’s presence, combined with moments of sharp tension and understated action, keeps the film engaging. So much fun to be had in reading the intentional and unintentional nods to the Eastwood mythos. A snarl here, a staring down a gun barrel there, a perfectly delivered put down to boot. His character is an interesting one in that it predates by a few years the cultural obsession with 'correct language', the fear of ever perchance offending someone. Well what I take from this fine film is it's not the words you use that matter, it's your actions that count at the end of the day. Eastwood's bitter old Korea vet may not be fully conversant with the PC phrasebook, but he learns to truly love the people he was initially so dismissive of. See more Read all reviews
