Technically sleek but narratively weightless, it relies on visual wizardry to distract from a bare-bones story. The film opens with long, beautiful shots and an impressive sense of spatial immersion — then spends the next hour dragging out an extremely thin plot with endless close-ups of Sandra Bullock breathing. The setup is stronger than the payoff. Once the tension wears off, whats left is a hollow journey through increasingly implausible obstacles. It's not profound, it's not moving — it's just long. I get not everyone thinks this way, but there was no emotional or other connection to be made to the film, so the bad science really just emphasized the poor plot and storyline. The science was so bad you could power the world's electrical grid by attaching generators to all the historical scientists spinning in their graves due to its very existence. From the first death, I knew it was going to be bad. That guy was so annoying, I cheered internally for the thing that killed him. The dialog was dreck. Let's be clear ... my exaggerated vitriol over this film came from my own belief in the hype: "It's the closest thing to being in space!" It was really beautiful. The 3D was entirely effective. It *did* convey the feeling of being there. I love Sandra Bullock and I like George Clooney. But they compared this to 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was finely crafted for scientific accuracy (outside the parts that made it sci-fi). I didn't expect a Kubrick-worthy masterpiece, but aside from the effects, it was awful. Watch "Europa Report" if you want a well crafted space film.
