Three successive family Thanksgiving dinners mark time for Hannah (Mia Farrow), her younger sisters Lee (Barbara Hershey) and Holly (Dianne Wiest) and the men in their lives. Lee is having an affair with Hannah's husband, Elliot (Michael Caine), and trying to end her Svengali-like romance with artist Frederick (Max von Sydow). Holly is frustrated by her lack of career fulfillment and her increasing dependence on Hannah's largesse, while being courted by the hypochondriac Mickey (Woody Allen).

The marvel of Hannah and Her Sisters is just how many fully realized characters and relationships Allen is able to weave into the fabric of this extraordinarily well-written film. This script is one to be studied by aspiring filmmakers.

Hannah is arguably Woody's best movie. It is the perfect fusion of his comedic genius with his burgeoning talent, or let's say ambition, towards writing drama. Whereas Crimes & Misdemeanors separates tragedy and comedy into separate stories, Hannah's construction recognises that life is both tragic and comic, that both sides exist simultaneously on the same coin, that despair and suffering for one can be hilarious from a certain distance, and vice-versa. It won three Oscars, two for acting, and unusually for a Woody, one of those was for a male role (Michael Caine). Every character is given their due in this movie. Nobody is underwritten. The movie makes ingenious use of title cards to introduce each act, anticipating their ubiquity in Frasier, the best tv sitcom of all time. Unusually for 1980s Woody, we are gifted a happy ending, instead of his preferred downbeat. Ignore those obtuse negative reviews written by proles. Hannah is the zenith of Woody's comedic artistry.

Woody Allen frivolously invoked Ingmar Bergman’s existential approach through his satirically amusing performance and formulaic family drama that’s narratively constructed with a build agreeably consider this is one of his most skillful, finest thought process discourse with a talented cast with genuine conviction of humane complexity. (B)

Synopsis
