Blu B @RT43513976 Jun 24 The two leads have lots of character traits that the subplots all show but it never comes together to form any real kind of narrative at all beyond the two have struggles and stuff just happens. The editing & pacing isn't good and the biggest problem here. It just jumps borderline almost incoherently at points between the two. Drinking, a baby, a weird acougar secretary shared between them, holding jobs, health issues, the Mom being dead, between the two of them and just never comes together to form anything. Everything else is super basic. Benson isn't that good and the worst acting wise. The dialouge granted isn't nothing special but his delivery is just amatuerish to say it nicely and he just feels like a goof more than anything. Everyone else is just ok including Newman. His direction in this is very forgettable. No real distinction at all and this barely has a soundtrack to. It borders on being very dry but it's very boring the entire time. The lack of narrative, Benson's performance, and just very unremarkable execution is the major problems here. It's going for a melodrama showcasing the differences and struggles of two people from different generations trying to coexist but can't figure out at all how to tell it in a interesting or even basic way. Newman stars, directs, co-produces and co-writes a film that feels like an aim to create what the later NOBODY'S FOOL would accomplish. For whatever reason, I've never been able to fully appreciate Robby Benson's efforts. The Desperated US of the 30's has even some Hope with New Industries - But Look Today! There isn't a Industry anymore! How Selfish and Materialstic the Protagonists are! Alone of Finicialo Needs! And this is some Coastal Town where the People lay around the Beach! The Illusive Paradise! But then you see all this Rotten Cottages! And just of his Writing Talent which was smirked before they grown Wealthy! Alger is American Fact! And this All with the Typical Newman Humour this Time in his Perfection!
