American submarine Capt. Joe Glass is on the hunt for a U.S. sub in distress in the Arctic Ocean. He soon learns that a secret Russian coup is in the offing, a conspiracy that threatens to dismantle the world order. Once all this starts coming together, Hunter Killer is absorbing, even if Marsh and his screenwriters never pretend to be half as interested in their characters as they are in the submarines.

It's nice to spend a couple of hours in a fictional world where we don't have to worry about the American president doing something ruinously idiotic and evil. It plays like a nostalgic fairy tale.

Disappointing and derivative. It is like somebody said "Let's remake The Hunt for Red October, only this time let's make the script terrible and the acting wooden." There are some serious, good actors in this thing, but you wouldn't necessarily realize it watching this. There are points where the captain so rushes through the cheesy dialogue that it comes off like he is trying to spit out some bad food. Even Gary Oldman somehow manages to be bad in this because his part is so poorly written. Some of the action sequences are ok, and it does best when it leans into the action/special effects. I made it to the end, but only just barely. There are worse movies out there, but there are also a lot of better ones.

Cheesy dialog. Special ops players wear helmets. They do not care if we see their faces. Not much seems plausible. And yes, a fairy tail.

No spoilers, this is well worth a watch, fresh, plenty of heart and pace. The ONLY change I would make is a better ending (Last 2 minutes), the whole story is brought to a satisfing end. But it needed an ending like 'The Sum of all Fears' with Ben Afleck, that had a very human ending that really underscored the film perfectly...

Big fan of Gerard Butler, so maybe a bit biased, but in general the film was entertaining and easy to watch. Maybe I was expecting more of a "Hunt for Red October" style movie, but this is something that shows the interworking of submarine life and isn't the stereotypical rah-rah, stick it to the Russians hype video. The character setup is acceptable and the storyline is not too difficult to follow. Enjoy it on a streaming service, when you want to kill a couple of hours and don't expect an award winning movie.
