Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 21 hrs ago The sublime Le Havre is, surely, Kaurismaki's best feature, or at least his most loveable. A shoeshine man comes to the aid of an African boy whose family have been discovered by border control hidden inside a shipping container. A few good souls set their minds to helping the boy to continue his journey to England. Meanwhile, the shoeshine guy's better half is in hospital with a serious illness, the severity of which she is keeping hidden. Why do the people help the boy? For Kaurismaki, such a question would be so fatuous as not worth dignifying with an answer. As is typical for this director, a working class life on the never never (what does that phrase really mean?) is made to look like the coolest thing ever. Live music from non-famous musicians, the kind who play bars not stadia, is another familiar conceit. This is a French language movie, but Finland is represented by the lead actress and the repeated use of Apotheosis, an uplifting composition by Rautavaara. Emotional comedy. When a group of African stowaways is found hidden in a container, the boy Idrissa flees. Marcel sees the boy hidden in the water in the harbour and the police looking for him. He leaves food and money for the boy on the ladder. Meanwhile, Arletty has malign cancer and asks the doctor to not tell Marcel. While she stays in the hospital to be treated, Marcel brings Idrissa home and learns that the boy wanted to go to London to meet his mother. While Marcel plots a plan to send the boy to London, the mayor orders Chief of Police Monet to catch the boy. "Le Havre" (2011) is a sweet film with a feelgood story of empathy, friendship and solidarity. All the characters are beautiful people, and the conclusion has two nice surprises. My vote is eight. Kaurismäki makes everything flow seamlessly. Friendship, love, solidarity, immigration, and compassion all coexist without a hitch.
