It's quite long, but worth watching every minute (excluding one agonizingly long, depressing song toward the beginning. Sorry, Anne Hathaway.) The characters are all dynamic, the acting is exquisite, the writing is fantastic, the soundtrack is primo, and the plot is soulful, engaging, and plum excellent. My only real critique is 2.5 characters died of sadness. I assume that that's because it's hard to write a song where Hugh Jackman sings about how he's dying of pneumonia. Or perhaps the book is just like that. (I have not read it, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the movie to the book, but the film is so excellent that now I WANT to read it.) Overall, an utterly fantastic movie, that I fully intend to rewatch over and over again. And I'm not particularly even a fan of musicals, and yet I consider this one of my favorite films. Stellar cast all excels in character, of which some are very challenging. Very well directed and brought to screen by Tom Hooper. Amazing cinematography and visually stunning. Succeeds in portraying the perfect ambiance relevant to story. Drama, action, dilemma, emotion, intrigue, suspense, desperation and twists all weaved intricately into production.
