Tennis instructor Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) grows friendly with Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode), a wealthy student who shares an interest in opera. Invited to attend a performance with Tom, Chris meets the family and instantly attracts Tom's sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer). Chris marries her to get a job with her millionaire father, Alec (Brian Cox), but a dangerous affair with Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson), Tom's American girlfriend, threatens his newfound social status.

Match Point is melodramatic, with the whole story turned on a set of unlikely and ludicrous eventualities, which Allen only too eager to call “luck”. The story makes almost zero sense, and it works neither as a drama-thriller, nor as a romance-comedy.

A favorite I have revisited several times. A treat for Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson fans (and who isn’t?) it is a gripping, if cynical, thriller. Beautifully shot in London, with all the intimacy and affection Allen has previously adorned on New York City.

This movie was the strangest thing ever. I began absolutely hating it and hating the main actor in it. I nearly turned it off, but something kept me interested. The movie became something completely out of left field and I was shocked it went in that direction. The movie did a fantastic job making the viewer feel the messed up situations from each character and it kept me incredibly glued to the screen right till the end. Scarlett Johansson was great in it!

Saw it many years ago and it still sticks in my mind. Puts one on the edge of their seat and keeps them there. As the scenes unfold the slow moving train wreck that's coming takes shape.
