Allan C @RT15713161 03/27/2025 Based on a true story involving one of the film’s producers, Luke Wilson plays a 90s businessman fixer who gets called in by a mobbed-up lawyer to help two coke-heads who figured out how to monetize internet porn. One of the pair, an ex-NASA scientist played by SUITS’ Gabriel Macht, writes the code for secure online credit card transactions that is the basis for what’s still used to this day, but after they fail to pay off their mob partners, that’s where Wilson is called in make things right, which sets off the events of the rest of the film. Filled with drugs, Russian mobsters, and the adult film world, the actors play the film straight, but writer/director George Gallo, screenwriter of the classic action/comedy MIDNIGHT RUN, infuses a wicked dark humor into the film, which is the best thing about it. Where the film disappoints is that as the film progresses, it loses its sense of humor, gets more and more serious, and seems more and more derivative of other films, such as BLOW, which itself was derivative of other superior films, such as GOODFELLAS and BOOGIE NIGHTS. Overall, MIDDLE MEN is worth watching, but I’m not sure it’s one I’ll revisit. Still, it did make me want to watch some other George Gallo-scripted films.  See more Brad O @bradradio 01/24/2025 The pace of the movie is really fast. Feels like a madcap type of film. The movie is based on the life of Christopher Mallick. Mallick funded and produced this movie and apparently stole money from his customers to pay for its production. So, probably not worth watching if he's still getting residuals. The film cost $20 million to make and grossed less than $1 million at the box office. Joke's on him. The cast is outstanding (I didn't even recognize Gabriel Macht until I was a quarter into the movie!) and the story is crazy. Quick Side Note: I'm surprised Giovanni Ribisi isn't in more things. He's a solid actor. This movie checks off all the boxes of what a good film should have. Really surprised that this isn't talked about more. Felt like this movie was inspired by Casino. It had all the same elements and was presented in pretty much the same manner. Only difference is that Casino dealt with mafia stuff and this dealt with the internet boom. (Well this had a mafia element as well.) The similarities are uncanny. The story flows nicely with no drag and kept you engaged. Luke Wilson isn't what I would call a good actor (unless Wes Anderson is directing him), but he is decent in this. His narration was really good. This movie has a few laughable and oh crap moments. You'll definitely be entertained. The movie shows what it was like for a credit card billing company in the early days of the internet. An idea so simple that I'm surprised no one had thought of it until that point. They faced a few obstacles at first and were expanding too fast. They got help from the Russian mob and you can kind of guess how it all went down. This movie shows that you need to be careful who you do business with. Also, it matters how you conduct business. This is what you would classify as a popcorn movie. Just sit back, relax and enjoy. Luke Wilson, again, with a great job. He's great at maintaining that in-control attitude. The film points up the fact that no matter how smart, how good you are, how well you dance, dealing with the under-belly of society never pays.
