There’s been a lot of talk recently with the release of Backrooms on the fear of endless space and wandering around somewhere until it becomes very frightening for you. But Misery is the opposite of that for me. It really hammers in a fear of being confined to one room with the inability to escape from its walls. And then it takes that, and adds a mentally unstable person that’s trying to take care of you while also trying to hurt you. Both these things combined make this movie very unsettling but also very enjoyable to watch. I really found myself rooting for Paul. And this movie also does a great job of building tension and anxiety. My heart was pounding when he was exploring the house while Annie is coming home too. It was terrifying! So yeah I thought this was an excellent, anxiety inducing, tension building thriller that had me sitting on the edge of my seat! Fantastic film that definitely deserves your views. William Goldman's adaptation of Stephen King's novel traps two characters inside a single house and builds relentless tension through dialogue, psychology, and steadily rising stakes. Rob Reiner directs with remarkable restraint, allowing the suspense to build naturally instead of relying on cheap thrills. Kathy Bates deserved her Oscar for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes, a warm, funny, caring, and absolutely terrifying character, often shifting between those emotions in the same scene. James Caan is equally effective, making Paul's psychological struggle just as compelling as his physical one. Their scenes together are impossible to look away from. While the climax is more straightforward than the psychological battle leading up to it, the writing, performances, and tension make Misery an unforgettable thriller. See more Read all reviews
