'Moulin Rouge' is an intense musical romance with a striking, almost overwhelming visual style. Red dominates the palette, symbolizing love and desire, though its excess can feel exhausting. The sets feel artificial but add charm, while lighting brings nuance to the chaos. The music and romance work, but both can overwhelm at times. The story portrays a bohemian love where emotions drive existence, and the performances are functional, with Richard Roxburgh standing out. The climax brings together the film’s emotional peaks, though it doesn’t fully justify the preceding intensity. Not fascinating nor repulsive, it’s a powerful, exhausting experience—entertaining in parts but essential for those seeking cinema without restraint.

I had to watch it a second time to get into the music (I didn’t know all the songs were covers) but now I love it! It drags towards the end a bit that’s why the star reduction.

For Kit, Moulin Rouge! remains a near-perfect film. The aesthetics, the emotion, the historical layers... it hits every note. Cade came in with fresh eyes and was surprised by how well it held up. "I’ve watched it a few times," he said, "and it still lands. Complete story. Emotional payoff."
