While exploring a Mississippi River island, Arkansas boys Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) encounter Mud (Matthew McConaughey), a fugitive who needs their help. Though Mud killed a man in Texas and has bounty hunters on his trail, he is most concerned about reuniting with Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), the love of his life. Ellis, who is suffering the pangs of his first crush, agrees to help Mud. He and Neckbone do all they can to protect Mud and help him reunite with Juniper.

gary g @RT72075614 Jan 14 Really enjoyable movie. I would have given it a little higher review but for (in my opinion) losing its way at the end. It was like all of a sudden we're in a Mafia flick. And I'm still not sure if Michael Shannon's ( whom I love) part was really necessary. But as I said, it's an enjoyable movie and I would definitely recommend it. This kind of (pretty generic) story should have been told in about 90 minutes but it dragged for more than two hours and featured a pretty convenient and inplausible conclusion. McConaughey and Sheridan are fantastic in it, and the others do a good enough job with their roles to keep me invested in the story, which lacks in substance and intrigue. It is not an action film, a thriller, or a love story, but it keeps teasing that it might become one or all of the three at any moment. But nothing happens. I don’t think anyone wins or loses anything. That the movie never becomes much of anything by the end besides a glimmer of hope for the young protagonist’s future love life left me looking for another far more interesting movie as soon as the credits rolled.
