Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) and his cowhands Charley (Kevin Costner) and Mose (Abraham Benrubi) are driving cattle across a large expanse of country. When Mose ventures into a sparse village to buy a few necessities, he is met with violent hostility from Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon), an affluent landowner, and his right-hand man, Poole (James Russo). When Mose doesn't come back, Boss and Charley realize he's in trouble, so they plot to get him back and get revenge on those who captured him.

Decidedly “old school” in both content and intent, this doesn’t expand the parameters of the Western but instead feels like a throwback to the types of oaters that populated moviehouses until their fizzle in the late 70s.

Good to see westerns back on screen, not least thanks to Kevin Costner. Fine acting and filming, with a classic plot and even a romantic development, even if a bit naive one (Costner for you). The musical soundtrack leaves a bit to be desired, but this film is worth watching.
