I prefer the alternate ending version but it doesn't fit with future films. It harnesses one thing majority of this genre miss...the realness! The actors don't look like they are acting and the dialogue feel natural, unrehearsed and unscripted. The people and surroundings look real, not prop filled and sanitized. One con I have, although minor, as with other films as well, is the addition of post production sounds (the rumbles and heavy bass). If it were true found footage, there would be zero sounds besides what comes through the camera microphone. I remember when this came out in middle school and wanted nothing to do with it because the marketing made it feel real, like The Blair Witch Project. The audio and video feel like a real home movie. The loud thumps, creaking doors, lived in house, and realistic acting make it feel authentic. The mystery kept me invested, and anytime it was nighttime I thought, oh God, what are we going to get this time? The Ouija board catching fire, moving plants and doors, and the footsteps sequence are great. I also despise Micah. I understand he's supposed to be frustrating, but my God, this man is annoying. I don't love the fade to black between scenes, and the pacing drags during the day. The demonologist is also completely useless. It's not my favorite of the franchise, but it's the one that started it all. It's suspenseful, creepy, and entertaining. I love this; it’s a low-budget slow-burn that honestly still gets under my skin. What Worked: • The stationary bedroom camera creates a suffocating dread I totally dug. • Featherston brings a raw terror that made me buy into the nightmare. • The slow build from tiny thuds to demonic dragging hits hard. The Friction: • Micah is so stubbornly dismissive I spent half the movie wanting to yell at him. • The first act really dragged for me since it’s mostly just them talking. • The final jump-scare felt a bit too Hollywood compared to the raw vibe. Verdict: I love this. Watch for atmospheric dread. Skip if frustrating boyfriends annoy you.
