Earlier entries created tension by forcing viewers to stare into empty rooms, search dark corners and imagine what might be there. Here, the more clearly the threat is represented, the less frightening it becomes. The mythology expands, the effects become more prominent and the familiar found-footage mechanisms return, but the fear largely disappears. The biggest problem is not that the formula is old; it is that the film abandons the restraint that once made the formula effective. Showing more should make the threat stronger, yet here it does the opposite. One of the weakest entries in the series, and remarkably ineffective for a franchise that had previously managed to make me genuinely uneasy. I dislike this; showing the actual demon ruins the unseen mystery that made the franchise work for me. What Worked: • The retro spirit camera is a cool idea for a fresh, glitchy look. • Tying the 1988 VHS tapes to the present brought fun lore connections. • The time-traveling portal in the bedroom was a wild twist I kinda dug. The Friction: • A physical CGI body for Tobi stripped away the invisible dread I loved. • The pacing felt rushed, tossing slow-burn tension for goofy 3D jump scares. • The messy, chaotic ending honestly left me bored instead of scared. See more Severino A @RT32620831 Aug 6, 2026 As a horror enthusiast both in print and in film for the past 40 or so years, I think this film is a bit frustrating because there is so much senseless killing of innocent characters who merely protect their child. Had the plot shown a successful exorcism ritual, it would have been better and it would have refreshed the rotten, overused tropes. Unfortunately, the plot renders the efforts of the parents useless, thus making the film unidirectional from the start, making it appear more like a massacre film than a battle between good and evil. This is worse than watching your favorite characters die in utter uselessness just like what they did in the Walking Dead series. The film wrongly developed Leila's father and mother only to end up dying lackluster, irrational deaths. I do not see any reason, though, how Tobi could be that invincible. This film leaves many feeling unaccomplished. "Symbiote"-like effects are great but screenplay and plot are garbage even by the lowest standards. See more Read all reviews
