The jokes are never-ending and multilayered, calculated so that adults do not get bored -- which is important, because they buy the tickets. It's all bolted together with precision and good humour, although not much whimsy.

Penguins of Madagascar is a reasonably diverting romp featuring a few visually arresting set-pieces, including a fun scene showing the penguins aboard gondolas in Venice, but there's not really enough here to keep grown-ups fully engaged...

At the tail end of the Penguin craze of the 2010's and at the tail end of that era's 3D movie craze we have this spinoff of Madagascar. A rat not cooking food, makes sense. A bunny not being a cop, that makes sense. Penguins not being spies while an owl and a seal are fine candidates does not add up. When the movie has a joke that does not land, it lingers on it for a looong time. There is a "joke" about the villain being named Dave, and Skipper keeps getting his name wrong. They repeat that joke 27 times. There's another part where a character keeps munching on a cheetoh every time a person goes to talk. It isn't funny, it's annoying. And you know this movie has got to have its own fair share of fart jokes. This movie isn't without its own unique charm. It has zany spy antics and cartoon logic that will keep kids entertained. But your kids can get better.

Brilliant! The penguins always had a special place in my heart. Very well directed, amazing animation and cinematography, visually stunning. Great story and very well written. Sharp witted, fast paced and great story with lots of intrigue, drama, action, penguin mentality, funny and very entertaining. Classic

OK spin-off has funny moments, isn’t particularly memorable or meaningful. Penguins of Madagascar is fine. It goes quite off the rails of the original premise of Madagascar, but so did the 2008 TV show, and it offers enough fun and solid jokes to entertain enough. But it’s just not particularly memorable, doesn’t leave much of an impact at all, and I don’t care to ever watch it again. It’s not bad. Just not really my thing.
