Critics Consensus

Dramatically gripping and frighteningly smart, this Lynchian thriller does wonders with its unlikely subject and shoestring budget.

Aronofsky, who has parlayed this movie's Sundance success into two Hollywood deals, is that rare indie filmmaker who doesn't want to make hip romantic sitcoms. He's a genuine experimenter with a spooky visual style. Go to Full Review

Taylor H. @TH0809 4h I found it riveting. See more DaBul D @Amir91 4h First off I would like to state that the sound/music design paired with the black & white filming is incredible. This film is one that will have you feeling tense, stressed and at unease however through those emotions your brain is understanding the viewpoint of a mathematician going mad over the theory of pi. It’s an incredible film that showcases how a man can be blessed with wisdom but, at what cost? It’s one of those films that should be studied & taught to future generations of aspiring filmmakers. The acting is brilliant, the plot is there the whole time, the black & white contrast paired with the madness within NYC as well as the madness within the mind of the character along with the beautiful soundtrack creates a timeless classic. See more Michael H. @PoisonClan73 Dec 31 Pure garbage. Pretentious art house nonsense. By far, the most overrated movie in existence. See more Brian F. @FedUpDVDCollector Dec 20 This one was right up my alley. Definitely worth a watch if you can find it. The score at the beginning sets the pace being almost as frantic as this movie. It’s nonstop controlled chaos. That’s what the protagonist sees too. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 28 Eh, not my favorite, but it does introduce us to the style of wonderful director Darren Aronofsky. If you saw Requiem first, you'll see that he used the same style in this one. See more kevenquinlan Nov 14 Darren's first. A Really cool and neat movie and a great way to start a career. It was well received and it should've been. Love the black and white. Of course I'm keeping. See more Read all reviews
