Roman military tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. He arrives at a crossroad when he's tasked to investigate the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) following the Crucifixion. Accompanied by trusted aide Lucius (Tom Felton), his quest to disprove rumors of a risen Messiah makes him question his own beliefs and spirituality. As his journey takes him to places never dreamed of, Clavius discovers the truth that he's been seeking.

With so many horrible faith-based features littering the multiplex ranging from the ho-hum (Heaven Is for Real), to the inept (God's Not Dead) to the perfectly dreadful (War Room), it's nice to have one that treats its audience with respect.

"Risen" should be able to become, even nine years after its original release, the kind of film that any family should watch and enjoy during Easter. I'm sure they'll be just as (pleasantly) surprised as this critic. [Full review in Spanish].

With “Risen,” Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Aiello have come up with a story that we’ve never seen before, one that is in no way blasphemous, while offering up a “what-if” set of circumstances that are entirely believable and could have happened.

Joseph Fiennes takes us directly into the brutality of the passions of the people fighting for their beliefs. His skeptism ever apparent in his mind, on his face, in his mannerisms . . . this is the crux of Christianity. I'm on my fourth replay as I've shared it with friends . . . 🤓🍿🥤 I welcome diverse opinions and dialogue always . . . 5 stars for me !!

Excellent movie that surprised this jaded viewer. I loved the different what-if take on the aftermath of Jesus's crucifixion and Resurrection. Joseph Fiennes gave an excellent and believable performance as a Roman tribune whose job is to oversee human death and destruction in the name of Rome. Obsessed with finding Jesus's body, he interviews people trying to find the body--only to stumble upon the risen Christ. What he learns about the apostles, and himself through a conversation with Jesus, makes one think, "How would I answer Jesus's question?" Beautiful movie without gratuitous violence.
