Evelyn X @yiyi1111 Apr 3 I watched this film featuring Susan and Kate. It’s a bit weird, as characters suddenly burst into song and dance without any smooth transitions. The plot follows a man who regrets his affair with a provocative red-haired girl, only to discover he has terminal lung cancer from smoking. It left me feeling that people often marry just to escape loneliness, and turns out they just forget how they appreciate one another. There is love, lust, dancing and a lot of smoking which undoes the protagonist. Ironically, Gandolfini’s premature death was related to smoking that caused heart disease instead of cancer. There are many well known actors in supporting roles, which elevate the ultimate result. Good cinematography and good choreography. It leans hard into stylized chaos, with characters suddenly breaking into old-school pop songs in the middle of heartbreak or a fight. At first it feels strange, but there’s something raw and strangely beautiful about it. James Gandolfini and Susan Sarandon ground the film with real emotional weight, and the supporting cast (including Mandy Moore in a smaller role) adds to the offbeat charm. It’s gritty and exaggerated, but the pain, longing, and absurdity of love all come through clearly. It’s not for everyone — the tone is all over the place, and some scenes feel unpolished — but that’s part of what makes it feel honest in its own weird way.
