In this modern take on Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac," C. D. Bales (Steve Martin) is the witty, intelligent and brave fire chief of a small Pacific Northwest town who, due to the size of his enormous nose, declines to pursue the girl of his dreams, lovely Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah). Instead, when his shy underling Chris McConnell (Rick Rossovich) becomes smitten with Roxanne, Bales feeds the handsome young man the words of love to win her heart.

First rate romantic comedy that ranks as one of Steve Martin's best. Martin is brilliant in the lead role, funny and charming as Charlie, the perfect man despite his giant nose. He gets great support from the rest of the cast, with Daryl Hannah charming as the woman of his affection while Fred Willard is hilarious as the town's dimwitted mayor. Behind the director Fred Schepsi directs Martin's script to perfection, adapting the Cyrano story for modern day (the modern adaptation of Charlie having Chris listen to his words over headphones when he tries to charm Roxanne is perfection and the movies funniest scene). Just a great romantic comedy from beginning to end.

Such a clever adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. I LOVE this movie. It hits all the right buttons in the rom-com department. I have seen a lot of Steve Martin movies and this is probably one of my favorites. Plus, the locale adds a charm to the already cute and quirky story.
