I think mainly it fails to focus on something important to tie in the story as a whole or make the audience engaged with the characters. The title Silence is fitting due to the multivalent nature to the lack of intervention of God and the oppression of Japan on Catholicism. The film explores the idea of how deep does your beliefs go and very reminiscent of the journey of Christ. Those moments you ask, "Why God?" and seek intervention are pushed to the limits in the film. Bad reviews missed the beautiful nature of the film. They miss that there is something beyond our understanding and purpose for suffering. As, Jesus cried "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?" Only to reference Psalm 22 which is a stronger faith in God and a bigger message. They will not allow anything to take root—germinate—inside them. What he can control, he realizes with the help of Father Ferreira, is that he can save the lives of those about to die.
