This is still not mint-condition Shyamalan, but he's heading in the right direction, with some help from McAvoy, who gives Kevin-and 23 other characters-all that he's got.

The way that Shyamalan and Gioulakis emphasize close-ups and medium shots make for a taut, clean forcefulness that...give Split a leaner, hipper feel very different from the increasingly aestheticized studio polish of Shyamalan's earlier work.

Is this a dangerous representation of DID? Possibly, but McAvoy's performance as the different personalities, M. Night and Gioulakis' cinematography and the secret tie-in to Unbreakable make this a lurid delight

SPOILER ALERT!! This is an amazing psychological horror film that had me on the edge of my seat for the entire time. First off, James McAvoy is AMAZING in this movie. The way he's able to play each personality different is incredible. Different accents, different mannerisms, different voices, and even different ways he positions his body. You can tell when he switches between a normal personality to "The Beast" and vise versa. It's like you can see him get bigger when he goes beast mode. Anya Taylor-Joy is also great in this movie and makes for a great final girl. Watching this movie for the first time is fun but I don't know if it will still be as fun rewatching it. But overall, Split is a great thriller and one that M. Night Shyamalan fans will really enjoy.

I thought Split was a great film that completely held my attention because itmoved at a steady pace. The tension builds from the beginning and carries through the entire film. Anya Taylor-Joy and James McAvoy were very well paired. Their scenes together felt intense and convincing, and you could feel the psychological push and pull between them. It’s hard enough for an actor to play one role, but McAvoy had to juggle several personalities, and he handled each one in a way that felt believable. Betty Buckley didn’t quite work for me. She wasn’t as convincing as the others, though her performance didn’t take away from the overall experience. This movie reminded me of Sybil, the one with Patty Duke, just without the homicidal tendencies. The ending wasn’t what I expected, but I thought it was good and tied everything together. Split is definitely a solid film for psychological thriller fans, but is it worth watching the prequel and sequel Unbreakable and Glass?

A fantastic central performance in a good thriller. This is definitely one of M. Knight Shamaylan’s better movies, it’s a tight, close-quarters script that’s able to be entertaining as well as deeply disturbing, largely thanks to James McAvoy’s amazing performance. Aside from some twists and turns, it is kinda “just” a good thriller, it’s not flashy, the structure’s not easy to follow. But because of McAvoy, this is definitely brought to that level. Quite solid stuff.
