kish b @RT00429023 Nov 17 ★★★★☆ Stir of Echoes is a criminally underrated 1999 supernatural chiller that still packs one of the most genuinely unsettling punches in the genre. Kevin Bacon delivers one of his best performances ever as Tom Witzky, an ordinary Chicago lineman who gets hypnotized at a party "for fun" and wakes up seeing dead people (specifically one very pissed-off dead girl who won’t leave him alone). Bacon sells the slow descent from skepticism to obsession to full-blown terror so convincingly that you feel his sanity unraveling in real time. The supporting cast is perfect: Kathryn Erbe as the worried wife, Illeana Douglas as the sister-in-law who accidentally opened the door, and little Zachary David Cope as the creepy-calm kid who sees ghosts like it’s Tuesday. David Koepp (directing his own script) nails the working-class Chicago atmosphere: row houses, neighborhood bars, Friday-night football games, and digs that feel lived-in instead of movie sets. The scares are old-school brilliant: flickering lights, sudden reflections, that fingernail-scraping-down-the-wall sound, and one jump scare with a rocking chair that still makes me yelp twenty-five years later. The reveal is bleak, disturbing, and perfectly earned, and the final shot of the house going silent is pure nightmare fuel. Four stars: one for Bacon’s all-in performance, one for the relentless tension, one for the grounded blue-collar vibe that makes the supernatural feel scarier, and one because it somehow manages to be both a ghost story and a tragedy about buried secrets in plain sight. Neither will you. 👻🔨🏠 See more Ti H. @Tisha Oct 22 To those who say the movie wasn't really that profound you need to realize it was based on a book published in 1958 and it was ahead of its time ahead of sixth sense so if there's any fault to be had in this movie it's with the direction because Kevin Bacon brings home the bacon. It's watchable because of him, and because of Kathryn Erbe, and Illeana Douglas--all highly entertaining.
