Whatever The Alchemist Cookbook has to express, it expresses through scenes that feel as though someone were dared to do something while a camera rolled, in the near-extinct tradition of the transgressive underground movie.

Worst movie I’ve ever seen. Plays like a middle school film project. Yes, not even high school much less college tier film project. The ending tries to be ambiguous but is instead just devoid of any substance. There was one semi good scene that makes you think it’s going somewhere but even that was short lived and underwhelming.

It almost loses you in the opening act but the outstanding performances from the only two actors in this tale are enough to keep you going. And you'll be happy you did until the last ten seconds when the film plummets.

Rotten if you hate movies that do not wrap up at the end. Great if you love head scratchers that you have to watch a few times to try to figure out. Cookbook could have been mental illness, demons or meth.

The actor who played the protagonist committed and did an amazing job, but it didn't pay off on the promise of the intriguing chapter titles and marketing material. I kept waiting for anything interesting happen, but other than a sad lonely man going off his meds in the middle of the forest, nothing did. If it weren't for the performance it would have been a complete waste of time.
