Erin M @RT81025529 03/20/2025 The Forger is far from a perfect movie, but the story is compelling, and can I just say it, Christopher Plummer is an adorable old con man in this movie who I found so charming it was hard not to like the movie just because of him. The pacing was a little slow, but you know, I enjoyed it not being so fast paced. The subject matter called for it. It was supposed to be a somber themed movie giving you time to think about what you would do if you were in their circumstances. The heist was a little too easy, but I thought John Travolta's performance was compelling and quiet. It worked. I don't know why the overall ratings are so low. I'd think it should be in the mid-60's at least for overall rating. Don't believe all the negative reviews, if you are in the mood for a moody, crime-based movie, got for it with The Forger. This a good one to watch. Sometimes folks get it wrong. Audiences hated It's a Wonderful Life when it came out way back when & now it's a classic. I hesitated watching The Forger based to the ratings but I'm glad I did. I miss seeing Travolta more often at the movies-he's an interesting character actor now and still love seeing him on the screen. Tye Sheridan gave a nice, thoughtful performance and Abigail Spencer did a great job too. Wish they had given her character a bit more depth would be my biggest criticism. I think folks today want to see stuff blown up & tons of VFX when a well told story can be just as powerful. I wish Hollywood would get away from VFX, Comic Book stuff & come back to original scripts but I also get their struggle to find a consistent movie theatre audience post-COVID. See more James K @RT11508654 03/17/2025 I thought the movie was good enough. I think the hate comes from viewers expecting it to be some big heist film like the ocean's films. It's billed as a drama, not a thriller. It's more centrally focused on the relationship between a father, his son, and his son's son. I mean, there were some legitimately good performances from the main cast. Christopher Plummer was intense and passionate as he always is. A young Tye Sheridan, still cutting his teeth in the business, was surprisingly talented and moving. And John Travolta played the grieving father role rather convincingly. I will say that he was the weakest of the main trio, and his accent was a little distracting... And annoying. (I don't know why Travolta always has to do weird voices in these lower end movies, but it didn't sound Bostonian like it was supposed to). The overall story wasn't bad either, but some aspects of it worked better than others. You know, the police stuff lacked believability and was completely unremarkable. Almost didn't factor into the story at all. The art stuff wasn't the most interesting, but at least it was integral to the plot. The big heist at the end wasn't the most elaborate or exciting thing you ever seen, but they did the best with what they had. Where this movie really worked though, what I wish had been a bigger part of the film, was the family stuff. Without giving too much away, there was some heavy subject matter at the center of this film. Things that I initially disliked because they didn't make sense, came into focus. It added a measure of likability and relatability to our characters that wasn't there before. There were a number of emotional and touching scenes between a father and his son, who he would have done anything to make happy. I even got a little choked up at the very end, which almost never happens to me. So while the overall execution may not have been the best, this movies' heart was in the right place.
