Two highly-trained operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it's too late.

It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great.

The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better.

For a movie like this to excel, the creators have to thread a very specific needle. The romance has to spark. The monsters have to be terrifying. The mystery needs to be fully engaging. Unfortunately, The Gorge is halfway there in all three facets.

I knew nothing about the movie going in and the story that unraveled was full of tension and mystery. The romantic arc was surprisingly captivating and the acting was superb. Definitely one of the most unique films of the past year.
