Like the filmmaker’s last work, ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘The Odyssey’ has a downbeat, apocalyptic bent—but, unlike ‘Oppenheimer,’ or any previous Nolan film, the new film is also centrally about what human beings owe one another.

Still, it’s Nolan’s party and he can do what he wants with it. He’s succeeded in many ways—bringing a classic epic poem to life, modernizing it, but certainly not in a thoughtless way, and utilizing the full range of his prodigious cinematic toolkit.

Nolan’s rendition of the Odyssey is a character study of Odysseus, offering a new perspective on the Trojan Horse. Where the Trojan Horse is considered a triumph, for Odysseus it represents his great regret.

"The Odyssey" is one of the classics of Western literature. Nolan might have asked what made it endure, rather than treating it as if this was the cinematic equivalent of a Classics Illustrated comic book.
