After suffering a family tragedy, Mack Phillips spirals into a deep depression that causes him to question his innermost beliefs. Facing a crisis of faith, he receives a mysterious letter urging him to an abandoned shack in the Oregon wilderness. Despite his doubts, Mack journeys to the shack and encounters an enigmatic trio of strangers led by a woman named Papa. Perhaps there are Christians who will appreciate The Shack's Oprahfied universal heaven, wherein no bad deed goes punished. But it made us pine for the Book of Job God to spitefully hurl leviathans and behemoths.

Very well done, doesn’t get to the point quite as quickly as I would like, but it illustrates important theological concepts like existence of pain & suffering, and the value of same. I will be watching this again. I believe this is told from a "Christian" perspective, rather than a Roman Catholic one, but it doesn’t detract to my mind.

Somehow, this movie managed to surpass my expectations. It is well-crafted, thoughtful and heartfelt without conventional elements in mainstream films. It's cheesy, it's simple, it's clichéd, that's why I like it.

This movie does an amazing job of answering questions most people have asked at some point in their lifetime. It’s refreshing to see something honest and hopeful, instead of the mainstream despair that’s often fed to the public and has caused everyone to grow accustomed to it and overall desensitized.
