After suffering a family tragedy, Mack Phillips spirals into a deep depression that causes him to question his innermost beliefs. Facing a crisis of faith, he receives a mysterious letter urging him to an abandoned shack in the Oregon wilderness. Despite his doubts, Mack journeys to the shack and encounters an enigmatic trio of strangers led by a woman named Papa. Through this meeting, Mack finds important truths that will transform his understanding of his tragedy and change his life forever.

Perhaps there are Christians who will appreciate The Shack's Oprahfied universal heaven, wherein no bad deed goes punished. But it made us pine for the Book of Job God to spitefully hurl leviathans and behemoths.

It’s really too bad that most people only write negative reviews because this film is profound, and very moving. It can bridge the gap between Christianity and spirituality. I found this film deeply inspirational and beautiful. It’s about the process of faith, forgiveness, and healing on a level that defies the ego based world that we live in. I watched this film after opening up my narrow minded Christian ways into a more spiritual, more accepting way of thinking. It helped me work through forgiveness for myself and for others. I highly recommend it. Those with narrow minds I have a hard time seeing God is anything but a man, and Jesus should be a Middle Eastern man… He certainly wasn’t white! The Holy Spirit has no race or denomination, I thought it was beautiful that it was portrayed by an Asian woman.

Very well done, doesn’t get to the point quite as quickly as I would like, but it illustrates important theological concepts like existence of pain & suffering, and the value of same. I will be watching this again. I believe this is told from a "Christian" perspective, rather than a Roman Catholic one, but it doesn’t detract to my mind.

Somehow, this movie managed to surpass my expectations. It is well-crafted, thoughtful and heartfelt without conventional elements in mainstream films. It's cheesy, it's simple, it's clichéd, that's why I like it.

This movie does an amazing job of answering questions most people have asked at some point in their lifetime. It’s refreshing to see something honest and hopeful, instead of the mainstream despair that’s often fed to the public and has caused everyone to grow accustomed to it and overall desensitized.
